Summary: | The present invention relates to a novel process for the synthesis of 9, 9-bis (hydroxymethyl) fluorene. Synthesis from fluorene via hydroxymethylation to 9, 9-bis (hydroxymethyl) fluorene and further via etherification to 9, 9-bis (methoxymethyl) fluorene is known. The 9, 9-bis (methoxymethyl) fluorene is a compound useful as an electron donor for Ziegler-Natta catalysts. The present invention relates to improvements in the synthesis of 9, 9-bis (hydroxymethyl) fluorene leading to reduced amounts of solvent used and easier post-treatment while achieving high yield and purity.
