The invention provides a probiotic composition, and the probiotic composition comprises bifidobacterium longum subsp. Longum CECT 7894. The probiotic composition may be used to treat, prevent, or ameliorate intestinal barrier dysfunction (e.g., increased intestinal permeability) or related conditions, or symptoms, complications, and/or sequelae thereof, in a subject in need thereof by producing a polyphosphate.
