The invention relates to the technical field of preparation of high-grade linear alpha-olefin through ethylene oligomerization, in particular to a catalyst system for ethylene oligomerization reaction and application of the catalyst system. The ethylene oligomerization catalyst composition comprises a main catalyst formed by a ligand as shown in a formula (I) and an iron compound, and a cocatalyst formed by combining aluminum alkyl and a urea compound as shown in a formula (II). The invention also discloses a preparation method of the corresponding cocatalyst and an ethylene oligomerization method. The ethylene oligomerization catalyst system provided by the invention is high in catalytic activity, can completely replace a catalytic system taking MAO as a cocatalyst, can effectively inhibit generation of polyethylene wax, can improve the yield of liquid phase alpha-olefin, can improve the high-temperature stability of the catalyst, and is beneficial to safe and stable operation of a device so as to obtain rel
