The embodiment of the invention relates to an image sensor. A pixel array configuration and a pixel circuit that do not require interpolation between image units are provided. Specifically, embodiments provide a pixel array for an image sensor, the pixel array comprising a plurality of image units, where each image unit comprises a plurality of pixels for a color component of a predetermined color space; wherein each pixel is configured to detect at least one of the color components of the color space. For each color component of the color space, an electrical signal is provided as an output from the image unit, the electrical signal aggregating contributions of pixels for the color component of the plurality of pixels included in each image unit.
