Summary:Embodiments calculate birefringence of a material. One such embodiment constructs one or more three-dimensional structural models of one or more compounds forming a material. Each constructed three-dimensional structure model is aligned along a molecular axis, and one or more tilt angles of each aligned three-dimensional structure model are set. A molecular polarizability tensor for each three-dimensional structural model having the set tilt angle is then calculated. One embodiment takes into account anisotropy by determining the aspect ratio by measuring the width and length of each model having the set tilt angle. To continue, birefringence of the material is calculated based on the determined molecular polarizability tensor of the one or more models.
