Summary: | The invention relates to a method for producing a binder composition without using a compound selected from the group of phenols. The process comprises: (i) heating an aqueous composition comprising lignin in the presence of a catalyst; (ii) mixing a cross-linking agent with the aqueous composition from (i) and heating it at a temperature of 60-95 DEG C to prepolymerize the lignin and the cross-linking agent; (iii) mixing a tannin with the aqueous composition from (ii) to polymerize the tannin with the prepolymerized lignin and the crosslinker until a binder composition having a predetermined viscosity value is formed; wherein the molar ratio of the cross-linking agent to the lignin to the tannin is 0.5-1.7.
