Summary:It is determined (402) that an element of a radiation therapy machine is to be moved to a respective target location therein (e.g., prior to starting a treatment of a patient). Candidate paths are defined and accessed (404), the candidate paths describing movement of the elements from the respective initial positions to the respective target positions. The candidate path is evaluated (406) to determine whether it will cause a collision between any of the elements. When the candidate path does not cause a collision between any of the elements, the candidate path is included (408) in a set of candidate paths. A value of a metric (e.g., an efficiency metric) for ranking each candidate path in the set of candidate paths is determined (410).
