| Summary: | The invention relates to an instrument with an anti-pivoting mechanism. The instrument includes an elongate shaft, an anti-pivoting mechanism, and a control cable. A first joint of the back-pivot mechanism has a first joint coupled to the elongate shaft and a second joint has a second joint disposed distal to the first joint. An elongate tube is disposed between the first joint and the second joint. A restraint cable extends linearly between the first and second joints within a first groove formed in the outer surface of the elongate tube. The control cable is helically wound around the elongated tube within a second groove formed in the outer surface. The joints are coupled by a restraint cable such that when the anti-pivoting mechanism is manipulated by the control cable, the first joint pivots in a first direction and the second joint pivots in an opposite second direction to maintain the first and second joints in a parallel orientation.
