The present disclosure relates to methods and apparatus for efficient access to multi-dimensional data structures and/or other large data blocks. The parallel processing unit includes a plurality of processors, each processor coupled to the memory access hardware circuitry. Each memory access hardware circuit is configured to receive a memory access request specifying coordinates of a multi-dimensional data structure from a coupled processor, where the memory access hardware circuit is one of a plurality of memory access circuits, each memory access circuit coupled to a respective one of the processors; and, in response to the memory access request, converting the coordinates of the multi-dimensional data structure into a plurality of memory addresses of the multi-dimensional data structure, and asynchronously transmitting at least a portion of the multi-dimensional data structure using the plurality of memory addresses for processing by the coupled processor. The memory location may be in a shared memory and
