Summary: | The invention relates to a mass damper capable of automatically tuning. A system and method includes a mass damper for reducing vibrations in a structure or machine. The mass damper includes a frame that is linearly movable along a base that includes a track gear. The flywheel is in geared engagement with the track gear to be rotationally driven as the frame moves linearly relative to the base. A rotary damper is mounted on the frame and in geared engagement with the flywheel, the rotary damper generating a counter torque against rotation of the flywheel, the counter torque being proportional to a rotational speed of the flywheel. The rotary damper has electrical characteristics that are automatically adjusted to vary the counter torque and tune the mass damper.
