The present invention relates to a use of a tetraarsenic hexoxide (As4O6) composition in the preparation of a pharmaceutical composition for the prevention or treatment of cancer, the tetraarsenic hexoxide (As4O6) composition comprising 99% or more of a polymorphic substance a of tetraarsenic hexoxide having the following characteristics i to iii; i, unit cell constants: alpha = beta = gamma = 90 degrees, ii, As-O bond length: iii, O-As-O bond angle: 98.36 degrees.
