The present invention relates to a novel process for producing high purity onium salts of bis (fluorosulfonyl) imides and alkali metal salts of bis (fluorosulfonyl) imides on an industrial scale and at reasonable costs when compared to other available processes. The method includes the steps of reacting a bis (chlorosulfonyl) imine or a salt thereof with an onium halide other than an onium fluoride to produce an onium salt of the bis (chlorosulfonyl) imine, reacting the onium salt of the bis (chlorosulfonyl) imine with an onium fluoride to produce an onium salt of the bis (fluorosulfonyl) imine, and reacting the onium salt of the bis (chlorosulfonyl) imine with an onium halide other than an onium fluoride to produce an onium salt of the bis (fluorosulfonyl) imine.
