The invention discloses a glutaric acid preparation method, which comprises: (S1) in the presence of a reducing atmosphere and a supported metal catalyst, carrying out a reaction on one or two compounds represented by a formula I to obtain a product containing a compound represented by a formula II and/or a compound represented by a formula III, and (S2) oxidizing the product obtained in the step (S1) to obtain glutaric acid. According to the method, furfural or furfuryl alcohol is subjected to water-phase hydrogenation rearrangement to prepare a mixture of cyclopentanone and cyclopentanol, and then the mixture is oxidized to prepare glutaric acid. Compared with other raw materials for synthesizing glutaric acid, the furfural or furfuryl alcohol has obvious price advantage.
