A method for upgrading a pyrolysis oil can include contacting the pyrolysis oil with hydrogen under reaction conditions in the presence of a mixed metal oxide catalyst to produce a reaction effluent. The pyrolysis oil may include a polycyclic aromatic compound. The mixed metal oxide catalyst may include a plurality of catalyst particles, and each of the plurality of catalyst particles has a plurality of metal oxides.
