Summary:A method (800) for representing a period of validity of a certificate includes obtaining a root digital certificate (210R) from a root certificate authority (310R) and generating a chain of intermediate certificate authorities (310N). Each intermediate certificate issuer includes a respective intermediate certificate (210N) digitally signed by the intermediate certificate issuer and a respective verification time period (312) indicating a time range that allows the intermediate certificate issuer to digitally sign the certificate. The respective verification time period includes a verification time period for each lower intermediate certificate authority in the chain. The method includes generating a certificate revocation list (510) and generating a plurality of final entity certificates (210L).
