Abstract An asphalt composition suitable for spinning may include an asphalt having a softening point (SP) of less than 400 DEG C and capable of achieving a pre-fracture radial Hungry strain of about 0.7 to about 10 at a spinning temperature (Ts) in the range of about SP-30 DEG C to about SP + 80 DEG C. A method of making a carbon fiber from a pitch composition at a temperature within a range of spinning temperatures (Ts) may include determining a temperature range where the maximum radial Hunki strain ([epsilon] R) is above a minimum process radial Hunki strain, and where the minimum process radial Hunki strain is within a range of about 0.7 to about 10. The range of spinning temperatures (Ts) may be determined by measuring the maximum radial Hungry strain (epsilonR) prior to fracture at a range of different temperatures and strain rates.
