A method of making a carbon fiber from a pitch composition at a temperature within a range of spinning temperatures (Ts) may include determining a temperature range where the maximum radial Hunki strain ([epsilon] R) is above a minimum process radial Hunki strain, and where the minimum process radial Hunki strain is within a range of about 0.7 to about 10. The range of spinning temperatures (Ts) may be determined by measuring the maximum radial Hungry strain (epsilonR) prior to fracture at a range of different temperatures and strain rates.
