Summary:A composite layer for controlling dendritic growth in an electrochemical cell having an active metal anode that is susceptible to dendritic growth during cycling. In some embodiments, one of the composite layers includes a porous matrix having pores, solid electrolyte particles, and one or more alloying materials that are alloyed with the active metal such that each dendrite contacting the alloying material is alloyed therewith to prevent the dendrites from growing beyond the composite layer. In some embodiments, another of the composite layers includes a gel electrolyte and solid electrolyte particles dispersed in the gel electrolyte.
