Summary: | The subject of the invention is an irreversible electroporation return electrode and system. Methods and systems provide a body surface electrode, such as a patch and, for example, a back patch, that automatically detects detachment from and/or proximity to the skin within predetermined limits and thereby detects detachment of the electrode from and/or proximity to the skin. Upon detection of disengagement, the disclosed system instantaneously terminates delivery of pulses from an IRE generator that generates the delivered pulses to a pulse delivery electrode. By instantaneously terminating the pulse delivery, damage to the body tissue by overheating caused by the pulse is minimized or eliminated.
