A nuclear power plant has a nuclear reactor including a reactor pressure vessel containing a plurality of fuel rods comprising fission material. The nuclear power plant also has means for submerging the reactor pressure vessel in water to water-cool the reactor pressure vessel in emergency situations where cooling of the nuclear reactor is required. The nuclear power plant also has a primary core trap located outside the reactor pressure vessel, the primary core trap being made of a material adapted to retain molten core melt if it escapes the reactor pressure vessel. The nuclear power plant also has a secondary core trap outside the primary core trap, the secondary core trap lined with a tank filled with water to submerge the primary core trap and thereby water-cool the primary core trap in normal use of the nuclear power plant.
