The present invention provides a composition for tissue staining containing carbon particles having an average particle diameter of less than 0.3 [mu] m (e.g., less than 0.2 [mu] m) and one or more agents (e.g., an anti-settling agent and/or a surfactant) that maintain the carbon particles in suspension. In some cases, the anti-settling agent may also have mucoadhesive properties. The composition for tissue staining is visually dark and does not rapidly disperse when introduced into a tissue region of interest, thereby ideally marking the region, which can be clearly and long-term visualized by, for example, direct visualization, endoscopic examination, or laparoscopic examination.
