Summary: | The present invention provides silica-based fluorescent nanoparticles that can be used to accurately detect, characterize, monitor and treat diseases such as cancer. The diameter of the nanoparticles ranges from about 0.1 nm to about 100 nm. The nanoparticles have a fluorescent compound located therein, and have higher brightness and fluorescent quantum yield than free fluorescent compounds. The nanoparticles may be coated with an organic polymer, such as polyethylene glycol (PEG). The nanoparticles may further be conjugated with ligands capable of binding to cellular components associated with a particular cell type. A therapeutic agent may be linked to the nanoparticles. In order to make the nanoparticles detectable not only by optical fluorescence imaging but also by other imaging techniques, radionuclides/radio metals or paramagnetic ions may be conjugated to the nanoparticles.
