A system and method for preventing an out-of-control condition of an industrial machine. A kinematic pair of the industrial machine is monitored to determine whether the industrial machine has a risk of entering an out-of-control state. If the kinematic pair parameter exceeds a threshold indicating that an out-of-control condition may be entered, the force or torque limit is increased such that the industrial machine has an additional force or torque to decelerate the industrial machine when decelerating.
