Summary:The invention provides a method for preparing a water gas shift catalyst, the catalyst, application and a process for reducing the content of carbon monoxide. The present invention relates to a catalyst suitable for the conversion of CO to CO2 and H2 by a water gas shift reaction. Such catalysts consist of iron oxide, zirconium oxide, cerium oxide or mixtures thereof, promoted by a platinum (Pt) content of 0.1 to 0.4% m/m based on the oxidizing material, and having a sodium (Na) content of less than 0.01% m/m.
