Systems and methods presented herein include a sidewall coring tool assembly for returning a core plug of rock from a sidewall of a wellbore as part of data collection work for exploration and production of hydrocarbons. The coring bit and the coring shaft of the present disclosure provide a space for moving cuttings away from a bit face when drilling into a formation. In addition, certain embodiments include a plurality of inlets circumferentially disposed on the outer surface at the first axial end of the mandrel, a plurality of internal grooves disposed on the inner surface of the mandrel, and/or a plurality of fins disposed on the outer surface to direct drilling cuttings and debris flow away from the coring bit.
