The invention relates to a fluid control device and a method of using the same. The fluid control device includes an inlet configured to be placed in fluid communication with a source of bodily fluid and an outlet configured to be placed in fluid communication with a fluid collection device. The fluid control device has an isolation portion that can be vented or evacuated. The fluid control device has a first state in which an initial volume of bodily fluid is flowable from the inlet to the isolation portion and a second state in which (1) the initial volume is isolated in the isolation portion and (2) a subsequent volume of substantially contaminant-free bodily fluid is flowable through at least a portion of the fluid control device into the fluid collection device.
