The invention relates to device management in an ad hoc presentation network. Control techniques for a device that is a member of an ad hoc presentation network are disclosed. A first network device may receive a data record representing a status of a network. The data record may contain data identifying one or more devices that are members of the network, any one or more packets of the one or more devices defined for the network, and a playback state of the one or more devices. When the first network device receives a data record, it may store the data record locally at the first player device. The first player device may determine whether the data record has a command to change a playback state of the device. If so, and if the command is addressed to the first player device, the first player device may execute the command at the first player device.
