The variable magnification projection optical system includes, in order from the magnification side, a first lens group having a negative refractive power, a second lens group having a negative refractive power, and a third lens group having a positive refractive power. During zooming, the first lens group is fixed, and the second lens group and the third lens group move. The second lens group includes a plurality of lenses having a positive refractive power. All lenses having a positive refractive power in the first lens group and the second lens group are formed of a nitre material having a transmittance greater than 0.98 at a thickness of 10 mm for light having a wavelength of 440 nm.
