Summary: | An automatic pump-based fluid management system, as described herein, includes an intercostal pump, typically an elastically flexible tube having an inlet and an outlet. The inlet is attached to a first tube that extends from the intercostal pump to a first region of the patient's body, such as a pleural cavity of the patient. The outlet is connected to a second tube that extends from the intercostal pump to a second region of the patient's body, such as a peritoneal cavity of the patient. In use, the intercostal pump is disposed between a first rib and a second rib of a patient. The intercostal pump is operated by being continuously compressed and decompressed between the first rib and the second rib as the patient breathes.
