A washing machine apparatus includes a microphone for monitoring sound generated during operation of the washing machine apparatus and a controller operably coupled to the microphone. The controller is configured to obtain a sound signal generated during operation of the washing machine apparatus and to convert the sound signal into a spectrogram representing a sound amplitude and a sound frequency that vary over time.
