Summary:A system allows for indexing any number of items in a geographic area, which provides a predictable query response time across a fragmented database. Items indexed to the geographic region are stored on a single fragment, and additional items are added to the fragment as long as overflow conditions indicative of undesired query response times are not satisfied. If the overflow condition is satisfied, the system extends the storage of items indexed to the geographic region to one or more additional fragments to maintain a predictable query response time. The system may maintain a fragment count representing a total number of fragments used to store items corresponding to the geographic region, which may be used to query one or more related fragments. The system may apply deterministic hashing to uniformly allocate fragments across database nodes of the fragmented database.
