A printing system includes a printhead for ejecting ink through an opening in a carrier plate to a deposition zone. The print medium is held against the movable support surface by vacuum suction conveyed through platen holes of the vacuum platen and transported through the deposition zone. The airflow control system includes upstream and downstream valves associated with the printhead, individually addressable channels for the vacuum platen, or both. The upstream valve and the downstream valve are arranged to selectively block and allow airflow to pass through the upstream side or the downstream side of the opening in the carrier plate, respectively. Actuation of the upstream valve and the downstream valve may be controlled based on a position of the print media. The channels are arranged to selectively control the supply of vacuum suction to respective columns of platen holes, respectively.
