Disclosed herein are methods of using modified liposomes or carrier proteins comprising (i) acridinium ester (AE), and (ii) a first agent encapsulated by the liposomes, and/or (iii) a second agent on the surface of the liposomes or carrier proteins. In particular, the disclosed methods provide methods of labeling a target of interest, determining a biological sample against a target antigen, and detecting a target antigen in a biological sample.
