Summary: | A composite sensor is disclosed that exhibits four deformation modes that are decoupled from one another, including tension, compression, bending, and torsion. In one example embodiment, the sensor includes a base body and six unit sensors. The unit sensors are paired such that each pair comprises two unit sensors arranged on opposite surfaces of the base body, the sensors substantially opposed to each other. Wherein two pairs comprise longitudinal axes substantially parallel to each other and the third pair comprises a longitudinal axis substantially perpendicular to the other two longitudinal axes. The base body is limited along one side of the base body. The composite sensor may be used in many aspects, such as portions of fluid-driven soft-bodied robots that pass through pipes and detect leaks. Methods of detecting leaks are also described.
