Summary: | A surgical instrument includes an end effector including a proximal end, a distal end, a first jaw, and a second jaw. The first jaw includes a first electrode. The second jaw includes a second electrode and a unipolar electrode disposed centrally downward along the length of the end effector. The first electrode and the second electrode cooperate to transfer bipolar energy to tissue during a bipolar cycle. The monopole electrode has a wedge shape that tapers in width along the length of the end effector. The unipolar electrode is electrically insulated from the first electrode and the second electrode. The unipolar electrode is configured to be able to cut the tissue using unipolar energy in a unipolar cycle.
