The invention relates to a device for equipping a tool (35) and to a method for equipping a tool for stamping or shaping plate-shaped material, comprising at least one punch (36) and a die (38); a punch holder (22) into which the punch (36) can be inserted; a die receptacle (21) into which a die (38) or a die carrier (39) receiving the die (38) can be inserted; having at least one guide device (17) by means of which the punch holder (22) and the die holder (21) can be moved towards each other; wherein the punch holder (22) can be transferred along the guide device (17) into a measuring position (52), in which the punch (36) is supported on the surface of the measurement object (48) and the measurement object (48) is supported with the underside thereof on the punch (38), and wherein the measuring device (42) detects the distance of the punch holder (22) from the zero point (81) of the punch holder (21) and the distance of the measurement object (48) from the zero point (81) of the punch holder (21), and the e
