In some embodiments, powered devices draw power from a common source of power, which is limited. In certain cases, exceeding the power limit may cause a disruption in power of one or more of the devices, thus introducing a source of communication failure. To ensure reliable communication, an attempt to increase the power consumption of a first powered device in a power group is first evaluated to determine whether the increase will cause the supplied power of the group to exceed the maximum power of the group. In some cases, if the increase will cause the maximum power to be exceeded, the increase is modified to fit within the maximum power level.
