The invention discloses a single-stage axial symmetry air blower and a portable ventilator. The blower (10) comprises: a housing (20) comprising a proximal opening (23) and a distal opening (25), the proximal opening and the distal opening being coaxially aligned; a stator part (30) provided to the housing; an impeller (60) positioned between the proximal opening of the housing and the stator component; and an electric motor (40) adapted to drive the impeller. The impeller includes a plurality of impeller blades. The stator component includes a plurality of air guide slots (35) along an outer surface of the stator component. A leading edge of an air guide slot extends tangentially outwardly from an outer tip of an impeller blade and is configured to collect air exiting the impeller blade and direct air from a substantially tangential direction to large by diverting air from the impeller and directing air along a meandering path towards a distal opening such that the air flow becomes substantially laminar flow
