Summary:The invention provides a water electrolysis system (10). A water electrolysis device (12) of a water electrolysis system (10) has an anode (36) and a cathode (38) which are separated from each other with an ion exchange membrane (34) therebetween. The water supply unit (14) supplies water to the water electrolysis device (12). A power supply (16) applies a voltage to the anode (36) and the cathode (38). The water removal unit (18) separates water from the hydrogen gas discharged from the cathode (38). The hydrogen gas pressure increasing unit (20) increases the pressure of the hydrogen gas from which the water has been separated by the water removal unit (18). The restricted oxygen gas discharge unit (28) restricts discharge of the oxygen gas generated at the anode (36) and makes the pressure of the oxygen gas generated at the anode (36) higher than the pressure of the hydrogen gas generated at the cathode (38).
