The engine control method comprises the steps that the rotating speed and the load of an engine are detected; whether a variable valve timing mechanism of the engine meets an actuation condition or not is judged; when the variable valve timing mechanism does not meet the actuation condition, the common air-fuel ratio of the engine is controlled to be reduced according to the rotating speed and the load of the engine so as to obtain a first air-fuel ratio; and the engine is controlled to operate at the first air-fuel ratio.
