The invention discloses a preparation method of a low-cost cationic etherifying agent, which comprises the following steps: (1) preparing trimethylamine hydrochloride; (2) introducing epoxy chloropropane to prepare a crude product; and (3) refining the crude product. The method comprises the following reaction steps: (1) pumping a byproduct hydrochloric acid into a reaction kettle with good air tightness under a stirring condition, and then slowly introducing trimethylamine; (2) slowly adding epoxy chloropropane into the reaction kettle through an elevated tank to obtain a cationic etherifyingagent crude product; and (3) refining to obtain a qualified product. According to the method, the byproduct hydrochloric acid is used for replacing industrially synthesized hydrochloric acid, so thatthe treatment cost of the byproduct hydrochloric acid is reduced, the environment is protected, and meanwhile, the production cost of the cationic etherifying agent is reduced.
