The invention discloses an online monitoring and diagnosis method and system for the state of a line arrester. The method comprises the following steps: obtaining a fundamental voltage characteristiccurve of the line arrester through an experiment; obtaining an environment temperature characteristic curve cluster of the line arrester through an experiment; monitoring and measuring the total leakage current and the ambient temperature of the online running line arrester to obtain fundamental current and third harmonic current; obtaining three corresponding curves from the environment temperature characteristic curve cluster according to the environment temperature; obtaining non-synchronous measurement voltage of a corresponding line on a transformer substation side, and then obtaining third harmonic current amplitude; calculating fundamental wave and third harmonic resistive current components; and setting a criterion variable and a threshold value thereof, and diagnosing the operation state of the line arres
