According to an exemplary implementation of the present disclosure, a method for managing a virtual machine is provided. In the method, in response to receiving a backup request for a virtual machine, corresponding metadata of a corresponding object in at least one object in the virtualmachine is acquired, and the corresponding metadata describes a plurality of attributes of the corresponding object in a file system of the virtual machine. Based on the respective metadata, a respective summary describing a base attribute of the plurality of attributes of the respective object is generated. An index of the backup version of the virtual machine is created based on the respectivesummary, the index which comprises a respective path of the respective object in the backup version of the virtual machine.
