The invention relates to a method for monitoring a starter (12) of an internal combustion engine (19). The method comprises: detecting at least one electrical parameter, indicating the current flowingthrough the starter motor (18), of a motor (U30, U45, U50, I30) during a start-up process; analyzing the detected electrical parameter and obtaining at least one characteristic value; comparing the obtained at least one characteristic value with a predetermined reference value; if the at least one characteristic value differs from the reference value by at least one predetermined threshold value,identifying a failure of the mechanical coupling of the starter (12) and the internal combustion engine (19); and if the failure of the mechanical coupling of the starter (12) and the internal combustion engine (19) is identified, switching off the starter (12).
