The invention relates to a modified intumescent flame retardant and a preparation method thereof. The preparation method comprises the following steps: (1) preparing methylolated melamine; (2) synthesizing methylolated melamine pyrophosphate; (3) preparing acid phosphate; (4) dispersing ammonium polyphosphate in water, synchronously adding the methylolated melamine pyrophosphate and acid phosphatewhile stirring, and performing ultrasonic dispersing to achieve ammonium polyphosphate cladding in order to obtain an intumescent flame retardant; and (5) carrying out ball-milling modification by using a silane coupling agent to obtain the modified intumescent flame retardant.
