The invention provides an electrolyte composition and a metal ion battery comprising the same. The electrolyte composition comprises a metal halide, a solvent and an additive. The solvent is halogenated ionic liquid or an organic solvent. The molar ratio of the metal halide to the solvent is 1:1 to 2.2:1. The content of the additive is 0.1-25wt%, with the total weight of the metal halide and the solvent as a benchmark. The additive is monochlorethane, trichloro ethylene, dichloroethane, trichloroethane, phosphorus trichloride, phosphorus pentachloride, methylpyridine, methyl nicotinate, or a combination thereof.
