Summary:A microbial fuel cell (1) comprises: a negative electrode (10) which is formed from a carbon material (11) obtained by laminating a plurality of graphenes (12), and in which the area of the surface exposed along the graphene layering direction (X) of the carbon material is 1.0 x 10-5 to 20 cm2/cm3 in terms of the carbon material volume; and a positive electrode (20) opposing the negative electrode. The negative electrode and positive electrode are immersed in an electrolyte (70) and at least a portion of the positive electrode is exposed to a gas phase (2).
