The invention relates to a leather cleaning agent and a method for cleaning leather by the leather cleaning agent. The leather cleaning agent comprises the following raw materials: trichloroethane, stearic acid, nitrocellulose, sodium carbonate, 3-7 parts of castor oil, an emulsifier, oil base amino acid sodium, butylated hydroxytoluene, acrylic acid, 1-5 parts of paraffin wax, alkyl pyridine hydrochloride, silicone oil, 4-9 parts of glycerinum and ethyl acrylate. The method comprises the following steps: 1) selecting materials; 2) dipping; 3) retanning; 4) brightening; 5) steaming; 6) covering with paint. According to the leather cleaning agent and the method, the brightness of the leather is effectively improved, no sewage and bad air which exceed the standard can be generated in a technical processing process, no influences are generated for environment, the strength and the abrasive resistance of the leather can be improved, the structure of the leather cleaning agent is compact, ahand feeling is improved
