Summary: | The present application relates to microorganisms and methods for production fatty acids and fatty acid derived products. The present invention relates to metabolically engineered microbial strains, such as bacterial strains, wherein the bacterial strains have increased utilization of malonyl-CoA for production of fatty acids or fatty acid derived products, wherein the modified microorganisms produces a fatty acyl-CoA intermediate through a mechanism of relying on malonyl-CoA but not relying on malonyl-ACP. In some embodiments, a genetically modified microorganism producing a C8 fatty acid ora C8 fatty acid derived product is provided, wherein the fatty acid or a fatty acid derived product is produced by growing a fatty acyl-CoA chain, and wherein, in addition, at least one malonyl-CoA molecule is used to extend the fatty acid chain, but the malonyl-ACP is not used. The genetically modified microorganism expresses nphT7, and the nphT7 produces a butyryl-CoA initiator from the malonyl-CoA, wherein C8 chains ac |
