Summary:The invention discloses a gesture recognition system and a method based on a flexible optical fiber. The linear flexible optical fiber with malleability is covered on the surface of each finger in theway of longitudinal repeated bending and transverse repeated winding. The optical information conversion and transmission device transmits protocol data with time stamps in a longitudinal fibre channel to miniaturize light. The electric information receiving and converting device receives the data and calculates the transmission time and the light quantity per unit time of the information in theoptical fiber channel, and identifies the bending degree of each finger by the transmission time and the light quantity per unit time. At that same time, base on the Sagnac effect, the micro-optoelectronic device simultaneously sends two group of light rays in opposite directions in the transverse optical fiber channel, and calculate the rotation angular rate of each finger by the phase differenceof the two groups of light
